The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday announced to enforce a dawm-to-dusk hartal for Sunday to protest against the arrest of BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and taking him on remand by the detective branch of police.

The Chattogram city, north and south district units of BNP called the hartal, said a statement issued by Idris Ali, in-charge of office of the Chattogram city unit of BNP Saturday afternoon.

Referring to senior BNP leaders in Chattogram, the statement urged the people of Chattogram to observe the hartal peacefully to achieve their democratic rights.

On early Friday, the members of detective branch of police arrested Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury at his home in Guslshan area in Dhaka.

Later on the day, a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court allowed the police to take him in custody for six days for interrogation in a case filed over killing of a policeman in Dhaka on October 28, the day of BNP’s grand rally in Dhaka. BNP leaders were alleging that the government was launching crackdown against the main opposition party activists across Bangladesh to foil their movement to press home their demand for resignation of the Awami League government, dissolving the parliament and holding the next general election under a neutral government.
